Tray pulled out his rifle and took up a position in front of the horses. He had them staked out, but they might still be able to break loose. If one of them did, he would be able to catch them.
The five men fanned out into the scrub oak and cedars, making their way towards the cave without showing themselves.
Londo and Highbrow were outside now, each taking up a position in the rocks. They had equal firepower, with Dollar and Rhonda in the fight. Stark would have more experience in his crew, but they wouldn't have the cover of the rocks and the cliff to their backs. It would be an uphill fight for them.
The men over in the trees began working through the rocks and brush, starting to fire at Tray and the others now. Their shots were quick and careless.
Several shots were returned, with no results. Tray took the bark off a tree an inch over a man's head, but there was no way to get a clear shot. Those men with Stark were professionals, and they didn't expose their positions.
A gunblast from somewhere very close rang in Tray's ears. He heard the explosion as if it came from inside his head. Everything went black in front of his eyes, and an incredible pain tore through his skull. He was vaguely aware of the gun slipping from his fingers, of feeling the hot earth against his face. His eyes were closed against the waves of pain that attacked him. His body was numb, his ears hearing only the roar of the bullet. Then there was nothing at all.
Heather watched in horror, unable to do anything to help. Londo had shot Tray in the head! Her first impulse was to scream, but she'd learned to control herself. She knew that it would be foolish to try and crawl out to Tray, so she held her position.
Meanwhile, Londo turned his gun on Highbrow. He blew away the back of the man's skull, knocking him down over the rocks he'd been hiding behind. Before Dollar and Rhonda realized what was going on, they were covered by the big man's gun.
Heather scooted back deeper into the rocks. She couldn't climb or run, so she could only remain hidden and hope no one bothered to look for her. By pulling herself up between the cliffs wall and a jagged stone slab, she could see the front of the cave.
Several men came up the trail, then wove their way through the trees and rocks to arrive at the mouth of the cave. They stopped and laughed at Rhonda and Dollar being herded over in front of them by Londo.
"Good thinking, Rhonda," a man with long, dirty hair and a red beard said. "You hired on Londo here-but he was waiting for me. We've been informed of your progress every day, courtesy of Londo here and his marks on the trees."
"You vile, dirty, rotten, stinking maggot!" Rhonda cried at the big man. "You've undermined us from the very start!"
"Hiring a man you know nothing about is stupid," Londo said simply.
